GENERIC LETTER 92-01, REV. 1 1 SUPPLEMENT 1 REACTOR VESSEL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 & 2 FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NOS. DPR-70 & DPR-75 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 & 50-311 The NRC issued Supplement 1 to Generic Letter (GL) 92-01, Revision 1 on May 19, 1995.
Part 1 of the Generic Letter requests licensees to describe those actions planned or taken to locate all data relevant to the determination of reactor pressure vessel integrity, or provide an explanation of why the existing database is considered complete.
In response to this request, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) provides the following information for Salem Units 1 and 2:
The following actions have been taken to locate relevant reactor pressure vessel data:
Combustion Engineering (CE) prepared a compilation of records for Salem Units 1 and 2 beltline welds in 1985.
This compilation included information on chemical analyses and mechanical properties.
In addition, CE prepared reports for Salem Units 1 and 2 in 1988 which included the results of a fabrication document review.
Westinghouse input to PSE&G for the 1992 response to GL 92-01, Revision 1 included data retrieval from their records for the Salem pressure vessels.
PSE&G is taking the following actions to locate additional data which may be relev'ant to the determination of reactor pressure vessel integrity:

AUG 14 1995 Participation in Westinghouse Owners Group (WOG) activities related to pressure vessel data compilation including the preparation of a database for vessels in Westinghouse plants.
PSE&G will review the NRC Reactor Vessel Integrity Database (RVID) to locate possible additional data from sister welds in other pressure vessels.
PSE&G will exchange information with other utilities that have sister heats of materials in their pressure vessels.
In accordance with the NRC request, PSE&G will submit a response to Parts 2 through 4 of GL 92-01, Revision 1, Supplement 1 by November 17, 1995.
It should be noted that some pertinent reactor vessel material data that is being gathered by the industry for CE vessels may not be available by the November 17, 1995 due date.
The CEOG Reactor Vessel Working Group, which PSE&G is supporting, has estimated that data collection, review, and compilation into a comprehensive database and report may take approximately 18 months to complete.
This schedule duration is based on the large volume of material that must be reviewed.
Upon completion, a plant specific evaluation will then need to be performed.
PSE&G will provide a response to GL 92-01 Parts 2 through 4 by the November 17, 1995 due date that will include newly acquired data, if any, that is relevant to Salem Units 1 and 2.
At this time, PSE&G will provide a status of the CEOG efforts for data compilation as they may affect the S~lem Units 1 and 2 reactor pressure vessels, and identify the schedule for supplemental submittals, as necessary.
Should you have any questions on this submittal, please contact us.
Sincerely, Affidavit 95-4933
