RE: Status of PRM-73-18 Thank you, Jason. My only question is what is the approximate timeframe for the NRC staff review to identify the action the agency plans to take?

Status of PRM-73-18 Mr. Pietrangelo, I am writing to provide an update on your letter dated June 12, 2014, in which you submitted a petition for rulemaking to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). In your letter, you requested that the NRC amend the regulations in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Section 73.54, Protection of Digital Computer and Communication Systems and Networks. Specifically, your letter requested that the NRC amend the scoping language contained in 10 CFR 73.54(a)(1) to focus on protection of digital computer and networks associated with structures, systems and components that are necessary to prevent significant core damage and spent fuel sabotage or whose failure would cause a reactor scram.

The NRC docketed your letter as petition for rulemaking (PRM) 73-18. A notice of docketing and request for public comment was published in the Federal Register on September 22, 2014 (79 FR 56525). The public comment period for PRM 73-18 closed on December 8, 2014. The NRC received a total of 19 comments on PRM 73-18, which can be viewed at http://www.regulations.gov by searching docket number NRC-2014-0165.

The NRC is evaluating the petition. Once the petition has been resolved, the NRC will publish a notice in the Federal Register explaining the NRCs finding. You will also receive a letter at that time notifying you of the action the NRC has taken.

Please contact me at jason.carneal@nrc.gov<mailto:jason.carneal@nrc.gov> or (301) 415-1451 if you have any questions.

Sincerely, Jason Carneal Project Manager U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission jason.carneal@nrc.gov<mailto:jason.carneal@nrc.gov>
