SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL ON REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, SET 1 REACTOR VESSEL HEAD STUDS PERTAINING TO THE BYRON STATION AND BRAIDWOOD STATION LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION September 25, 2013 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon or the applicant), held a telephone conference call on September 25, 2013, to discuss requests for additional information (RAis), Set 1, regarding a stuck reactor vessel head closure stud for Byron Station (Byron), Unit 2, for the Byron and Braidwood Station license renewal application (LRA). The telephone conference call was useful in clarifying the RAis.

Discussion The staff and the applicant discussed RAis 8.2.1.3-1, 8.2.1.3-2, and 8.2.1.3-3, concerning the LRA and the issues experienced by Exelon regarding the stuck reactor vessel stud for Byron Unit 2. The staff agreed to re-word the RAis to reflect that the stud is left in place and inoperable, or not in service. In addition, the staff agreed that, for an applicant's aging management program (AMP) that may not be bounded by the operating experience underlying a Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) Report AMP, an applicant can propose a plant-specific AMP or exceptions/enhancements to the GALL Report AMP in order to reflect its plant operating experience.

The applicant said that it understood the staff's concerns regarding the stuck stud as expressed in the RAis. The applicant also indicated that it understands the RAis and will take the discussion into consideration during its preparation of the RAI responses.
