SUBJECT:

ARMED FORCES RADIOBIOLOGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE - APPROVAL OF REQUEST FOR AN EXTENSION, RE: RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DATED JULY 19, 2010 (TAC NO. ME1587)

Dear Colonel Melanson:

The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received your letter dated August 25, 2010 (Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML102440034), requesting an extension to the response time described in a letter from NRC to you dated July 19, 2010 (ADAMS Accession No. ML101870035). You requested an extension to October 8, 2010, to complete the responses to our requests for additional information (RAIs) that your staff will be able to complete without outside technical assistance.

You also requested an extension until December 31, 2011, to complete the responses to those RAIs which will require outside technical assistance.

We reviewed your request and approve the extension request to October 8, 2010, for the RAI responses that your staff will complete without outside assistance. However, we require additional information regarding the second request for an extension until December 31, 2011, to respond to RAIs which require outside technical assistance. Please provide an explanation for the December 31, 2011, extension request date with a projected schedule of the milestones which will indicate continued progress for responding to these RAIs.

If you have any questions, please contact Walter Meyer at 301-415-0897 or by electronic mail at walter.meyer@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
