plain language request The request was made during the comment period of Tuesday's meeting for a plain language summary of the discussion. A formal, thorough meeting summary will be issued and made publicly available in the near future. For the moment, we hope that the following addresses the request for a plain language synopsis of the meeting and the next step in this renewal process:
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a time-limited aging analysis (TLAA) that addresses environmentally-assisted fatigue. On December 11, 2007, the applicant (Vermont Yankee/Entergy) had provided information to the NRC in response to a request for additional information. The NRC had concerns about a methodology described in the submittal. Because of the highly technical nature of the issue, the applicant requested the January 8, 2008, meeting to address those concerns face-to-face and answer questions from the NRC.
The meeting will be summarized and made available to the public.
Additional information will be provided to the staff formally, and a meeting with the Advisory Committee for Reactor Safeguards is scheduled for February 7, 2008. Unless the issue is resolved to the NRC's satisfaction, the 5ER will not be issued. If the issue is resolved, then dates will be provided for the remaining review milestones and the review will proceed according to that schedule.
