Subject:
2nd Request for Meeting on Indian Point bJ 2%
Dear Mr. Collins:
As you will recall, on May 9,2007 I wrote to you with a request for a meeting regarding the NRC's handling of the license renewal process for Indian Point. To date we have not received a response from you with possible meeting dates with you.
Furthermore, it was reported in the news earlier this week that you have granted an additional public meeting for Indian Point at the request of the virulently anti-nuclear organization Riverkeeper and contrary to your new protocols for all U.S. license renewal applications.
This latest development deepens the concerns of our many member organizations from the business and labor sectors that you are yielding to pressure from political activists that have one mission: to shut down the Indian Point Energy Center. Yet Indian Point is a major source of critically needed electricity with minimal environmental impact and is an economic engine for our region.
Having not received a written response from you to my request for a meeting about Indian Point, on behalf of New York AREA'S more than 100 members - business organizations, labor unions, community leaders, and independent energy experts - I am requesting that you identify a proposed meeting date prior to June 21 that can take place at your office in King of Prussia, and to receive your response on this matter by the close of business Tuesday, June 5.
It is our serious concern that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will continue to play to the politics and hysteria of a vocal minority of anti-nuclear activists in New York and will not approach Indian Point like any other plant in America with balance and fairness throughout the license renewal process. This is why business and labor leaders throughout New York are growing increasingly skeptical that your agency will consider our concerns at all when conducting the license renewal process for Indian Point.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to a mutually productive and beneficial dialogue between us in the immediate future.
Sincerely, A. Jerry Krem Chairman 3 4 7 F i f t h A v e n u e, S u i t e 5 0 8 N e w Y o r k, N Y 1 0 0 1 6 2 1 2. 6 8 3. 1 2 0 3 F a x : 2 1 2 - 6 8 3 - 8 4 8 1 e a - a i t i a o r
