DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

J l

On February 5, 1982, while doing a routine radiological survey of the Hot Laundry Trailer Area, a technician discovered small 3

bits of lint coming from the dryer exhaust of Trailer B.

The air sample of the exhaust indicated airborne particulate activity of 1.5X10-10 ci/cc.

All operations in the laundry trailer were p

I immediately secured.

The occurrence was deemed a Significant Event as defined in 10CFR50.72.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

An inspection of the dryer units revealed that the HEPA filters.

4 were_either improperly installed or became loose.in transportation because the brackets holding the filter in place were loose, allowing a certain amount of lint to circumvent the filter.

Subsequent operation revealed that the filter unit was still not operating properly, and a new unit was necessary.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

The lint collected from the trailer unit was weighed and analyzed on a multi-channel analyzer.

The sample weighed 0.9 grams, with 4

a total activity of 8.9X10-2pci.
